The script path is part of the course
Busuu's Japanese course describes dedicated Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji material. LingoDeer includes an Alphabet section in its free-access scope and combines structured lessons with explanations and native audio.
Separate the course from supplements
Pimsleur can contribute screen-free listening and response practice, but it is not the reading path. Live tutoring can add correction and interaction without replacing systematic independent study.
- Structured foundation: LingoDeer or Busuu
- Audio supplement: Pimsleur
- Live interaction: a suitable tutor
When to add specialist reading tools
Add WaniKani when kanji and vocabulary review become a defined need. Add Satori Reader later, when supported connected text is more useful than another beginner lesson.
Use romanisation as a bridge
A temporary romanised cue can reduce initial friction. The course should still provide a visible path toward reading kana and gradually handling kanji in context.
