You are choosing a teacher relationship, not a syllabus
italki connects learners with independent teachers for one-to-one lessons. Public app listings emphasise filters for language, availability, lesson focus and price, while teachers control their own profiles and offers.
That flexibility is valuable when your goal is specific. It also transfers planning work to the learner: two teachers on the same platform can use different materials, correction styles and definitions of progress.
Build a shortlist around the learning job
Start with a narrow brief: for example, correct a five-minute B1 retell, prepare for a job interview, improve Japanese honorific choices or discuss one professional topic without switching languages. Search profiles for evidence that the teacher teaches that task.
Compare availability in your real time zone, languages spoken, lesson descriptions, introduction media and current learner feedback. Do not let the lowest displayed rate replace the fit criteria.
- Goal and level stated in the teacher's own offer
- Correction timing: immediate, delayed or written after class
- Materials and preparation expected from each side
- A schedule you can maintain for at least several lessons
Use the first lesson to collect evidence
Send the brief before the lesson and bring a small sample of the language task. Ask how future sessions would connect, what preparation is expected and how progress will be observed.
Afterward, record how much you spoke, whether corrections were understandable, whether the difficulty changed appropriately and what the next task is. Warm conversation alone is not enough if the lesson has no path toward your goal.
Pricing has to be evaluated teacher by teacher
There is no universal italki subscription price that represents the marketplace. Rates differ by language, teacher, lesson duration and specialism; the visible amount can also be affected by currency and payment conditions.
Compare the cost of a workable month, not the cheapest search result. Include the number of lessons you can actually attend, any package commitment and the current booking or cancellation rules shown before payment.
Who should choose italki—and who should choose neither
Choose italki when a suitable teacher is available and live feedback closes a gap that apps cannot observe. Keep one self-study input source so lesson time is spent using and refining language rather than encountering every item for the first time.
Choose neither italki nor another tutor marketplace when you cannot protect appointment time or have not defined the lesson job. A structured course or independent input routine can build a base until live interaction becomes the highest-value constraint.
When appointments are not the useful next purchase
A reading or video tool cannot provide the teacher's responsive feedback. Compare self-study alternatives only when input volume or preparation is the real shortage.
