Daily app comparison

Mondly vs Duolingo: which daily lesson loop fits?

Mondly and Duolingo both reduce study into short repeatable sessions, but their free boundaries, course structures and paid decisions are not interchangeable. The better choice is the loop that produces usable recall in the exact language course.

Best for

  • Beginners comparing two short-session apps
  • Free users deciding whether either paid tier removes real friction
  • Learners who need to inspect an exact source-target language pair

Watch for

  • Language presence does not prove equal course depth
  • Speech recognition is not unscripted conversation
  • Regional checkout offers should not become universal price claims

Compare the exact course, not the global catalogue

Mondly currently markets 41 languages and many source-language combinations. Duolingo also has a broad catalogue, but both products vary by course. Open the exact source-target pair and inspect later units, audio, explanations and review before choosing by headline count.

This matters most for a less common language or for someone learning through a language other than English. A supported selector is useful evidence of access; it is not a published CEFR ceiling or proof of equal depth.

Duolingo offers the broader free commitment test

Duolingo keeps its core language courses available without a subscription. That makes it possible to test the sequence, prompt style and whether a streak produces real completed work before deciding about Super, Max or Family.

Paid convenience can remove interruptions or add features, but it does not repair a mismatch between the course and the goal. Upgrade only when a named paid feature removes a measured constraint.

Mondly concentrates more content behind Premium

Mondly's official Free-versus-Premium page lists daily lessons and recurring challenges in the free route, while Premium opens the full lesson set, review and additional conversation features. Use free access to judge the daily loop, not to infer the whole course.

Its themed practice and speech activities can suit learners who want compact practical prompts. Check the exact checkout amount, billing interval, renewal and eligible languages because public promotions and regional offers change.

Run a two-week output test

Use one app for ten real sessions. After each session, close it and produce a thirty-second retell, short message or five adapted sentences without the model. Save the first and last attempts.

Continue when prompts require less support and the outside-app task improves. Switch when the app remains easy but the independent response does not change, or when setup friction repeatedly prevents the session.

Who should choose neither?

Choose neither when connected listening, reading or spontaneous interaction is the missing job. An input platform, tutor or carefully selected media may create the challenge that another short beginner course cannot.

Do not buy both simply to preserve two streaks. One primary lesson loop plus one complementary real task is easier to measure and leaves more time for the language itself.

The winner is the app that survives ten sessions and improves an outside-app task in your exact language—not the app with more badges.

If beginner prompts are no longer the bottleneck

The useful next purchase may be no purchase at all. Identify whether longer input, retrieval or feedback is missing before replacing a familiar course.
