Name the failure, not the feeling
Replace ‘I am stuck’ with a task: I lose the main point of a five-minute podcast; I cannot answer without translating; I repeat the same case error; or I avoid longer text.
A product decision becomes possible only after the failure is specific enough to test again.
Input bottleneck
When natural material is opaque, reduce difficulty or add support rather than collecting more random hours. Use transcript-supported listening, graded text or a familiar topic and track the main message.
When controlled content is easy but real material is never attempted, move one weekly block into supported authentic input.
Retrieval and interaction bottleneck
If understood language is slow to produce, use timed recall, short retells and recurring conversation topics. A tutor can create responsive pressure, while audio prompts create a more controlled bridge.
Measure preparation time, response latency, repair and whether the same correction is used later.
Structure or feedback bottleneck
Recurring grammar errors may need explicit contrast and targeted production. Repeating a complete beginner course is inefficient when only one system remains unstable.
Choose feedback that can diagnose the error. Community correction, speech recognition and expert teaching provide different depth.
Run a six-week experiment
Keep most of the routine stable. Change one primary activity, define a weekly minimum and repeat the original task at the end.
