Evaluate the tutor, not only the platform

Preply's public catalogue currently exposes 40 named language categories, but the experience depends on the chosen tutor's language variety, teaching approach, availability and goal fit. A large marketplace creates choice; it does not standardise the lesson.

Write a short brief before searching: current level, target task, preferred correction, schedule and any regional or professional requirement. Compare evidence against that brief rather than choosing the lowest displayed rate.

Use the paid trial as a working session

The 25- or 50-minute trial lesson is paid. Bring a real sample task and ask how future lessons would diagnose, practise and revisit it.

Look for a concrete next block, usable feedback and communication that fits your pace. A friendly introduction alone does not establish that a recurring lesson plan will address the goal.

Understand the tutor-specific subscription

After the trial, each tutor has a separate recurring subscription. The current model renews every 28 days with a minimum of four lessons, so the meaningful cost is tutor rate multiplied by a schedule you can actually complete.

Tutor-set local pricing means there is no honest universal Preply subscription figure. Record the exact amount, lesson count, next billing date and what happens if you later switch tutors.

Plan around renewal and lesson balance

Preply says a subscription should be cancelled at least 24 hours before the next billing date. Unscheduled lesson balance can expire under the subscription rules, and late lesson changes can also have consequences.

Schedule the cycle early, keep calendar capacity below the optimistic maximum and read the current refund and cancellation conditions in the purchase flow. A conditional refund route is not a general satisfaction guarantee.

Choose Preply, another method or neither

Choose Preply when live interaction, tailored correction and accountability justify recurring appointments. A general app can remain a complement for input or review, but it cannot provide the same responsive conversation.

Choose a self-paced course or input tool when the next need is foundational sequence, extensive listening or flexible study. Choose neither paid option until the calendar can support the minimum recurring lessons without creating unused balance.
