- Busy buyers deciding between flexible booking and recurring lessons

- Tutor quality, price and schedule vary inside both marketplaces
- Preply's current subscription renews every 28 days rather than monthly

The tutor is the product inside both platforms
A marketplace logo cannot guarantee correction quality, preparation or rapport. Start with a concrete task—such as correcting a B1 retell, rehearsing an interview or explaining recurring pronunciation errors—and shortlist tutors who describe that work.
Compare their introduction, lesson description, current availability and correction approach. Treat platform features as infrastructure around that relationship, not evidence that every listed tutor delivers the same experience.
italki protects booking flexibility
italki's current official App Store listing describes pay-per-class booking, optional credits or packages, tutor-set prices and class lengths of 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. That can suit irregular schedules or learners who want to compare teachers before concentrating spend.
Flexibility still requires continuity. Agree on the next task before a lesson ends and keep one self-study input source between appointments so every session does not restart from an unrelated conversation.
Preply builds around a recurring cycle
Preply's help centre says a subscription belongs to one tutor, renews every 28 days and currently starts at four lessons per cycle. Unscheduled lessons can expire at renewal, while already booked lessons remain protected.
That model can turn intention into a visible calendar. It is a poor fit when work shifts, travel or caregiving make four scheduled lessons unrealistic, so model the whole cycle before accepting the tutor's displayed lesson rate.
Use the first lesson as a controlled comparison
Send the same short brief to each shortlisted tutor. Bring a sample, ask how future lessons would connect and record speaking time, useful corrections, difficulty adjustment and the next assignment.
Preply documents paid trial lessons of 25 or 50 minutes before a subscription. italki advertises introductory class options, but current availability and price should be read from the selected tutor rather than copied into a universal claim.
- Did the tutor understand the goal and current level?
- Were corrections timely, specific and reusable?
- Is the next lesson connected to observable work?
- Can the real booking commitment survive the next four weeks?
Who should choose neither?
Choose neither marketplace when the main gap is basic structure or understandable input rather than live feedback. A course, graded reader or listening workflow can build material to use later with a tutor.
Also choose neither when appointments repeatedly fail. Short independent speaking tasks or exchange practice may be less precise, but a completed routine is more useful than a recurring purchase that cannot be scheduled.
Compare the commitment for the tutor you chose
Compare the exact lesson length, appointment availability and amount due for each shortlisted tutor. These cost guides explain the different payment commitments; neither marketplace should win simply because it has an affiliate link.
