Tutor-platform pricing

Preply pricing: tutor rates, 28-day billing and real cost

Preply does not have one universal language-lesson price. The real commitment combines the selected tutor's current rate, the number of lessons in a 28-day plan, a separately paid trial and the fees or taxes shown at checkout.

Best for

  • Learners budgeting recurring one-to-one language lessons
  • Buyers comparing a tutor subscription with self-paced software
  • People checking renewal timing, fees and unused-lesson risk

Watch for

  • Tutor rates vary and cannot support one representative platform price
  • The trial lesson is a separate paid purchase before the subscription
  • Unscheduled lessons expire at renewal, while already booked lessons remain protected

There is no honest single Preply price

Tutors set their own rates, and the public catalogue changes with subject, language, availability, currency and individual profile. A low figure from one search result is not a representative price for the tutor, goal or schedule another learner needs.

Shortlist tutors by the actual task—conversation correction, exam preparation, relocation, pronunciation or professional language—then record each selected profile's displayed rate and available times. Cost comparison begins only after the tutor-goal match is credible.

The paid trial is a separate first transaction

Preply's current help centre says the first trial with a tutor is paid and lasts 25 or 50 minutes. A subscription is not required to book it, and the learner chooses whether to continue afterward. The trial charge therefore belongs in the acquisition cost, not inside the first recurring cycle.

Use the trial as a working session. Bring a short sample, request corrections and ask what the next four lessons would do. A pleasant introduction is not enough evidence for a recurring plan if the tutor cannot explain the learning sequence or fit the real calendar.

A 28-day cycle is not a calendar month

Each subscription belongs to one tutor and renews every 28 days from the initial subscription payment. The current minimum is four lessons per cycle, and a learner using more than one tutor needs a separate subscription for each.

Thirteen 28-day cycles span 364 days. That arithmetic is useful for annual planning, but it does not create an advertised annual plan or a guaranteed total. Pauses, plan changes, tutor changes, taxes, fees and exchange rates can alter later charges.

Do not multiply a tutor rate by four and call it a monthly price. Record the actual 28-day renewal date and model thirteen cycles for a stable-plan year.

Build the cost from exact checkout variables

For the first decision, record the paid trial total separately. For the recurring decision, use the chosen tutor's confirmed rate and the lesson allocation shown in the subscription screen. Preply states that each charge covers lessons with that tutor rather than general marketplace access.

The current billing guide says checkout can also include a processing fee and applicable tax. Preply processes payments in USD, EUR or GBP; when another currency is displayed, the final processed currency can differ, and a bank or payment provider may add conversion or international-transaction charges outside Preply's checkout total.

  • Trial cost = the exact trial checkout total
  • Cycle cost = the exact recurring checkout total for the selected tutor and plan
  • Stable 364-day scenario = the sum of thirteen unchanged cycle totals
  • Additional exposure = manually purchased extra lessons plus any bank-side charges

Scheduling risk belongs in total cost

At renewal, Preply says already booked lessons stay protected but lessons that remain unscheduled expire. A plan can therefore be affordable on paper and poor value in practice if work shifts, travel or tutor availability prevent the learner from booking before the next billing date.

Before subscribing, place the minimum cycle into the next four weeks using the tutor's real availability. Leave capacity for one disruption rather than assuming every ideal slot remains open. A completed smaller plan is more useful than a larger allocation that repeatedly expires.

Know the controls before the renewal date

Preply currently allows a learner to adjust the lesson amount, pause once per billing cycle for up to 20 days, move lessons to another tutor or cancel future renewal. Cancellation must be applied at least one day before the next billing date.

The platform also says a tutor's rate does not rise without the learner accepting the change. Even so, save the current tutor rate, cycle size, renewal date and cancellation state after each adjustment; a 28-day schedule moves through the calendar rather than returning to the same date each month.

When Preply is worth paying for—and when it is not

Preply can be worth the recurring cost when a particular tutor provides responsive correction, tailored tasks and accountability that a self-paced app cannot. The strongest evidence is a useful paid trial, a clear four-lesson plan and calendar space that remains realistic after ordinary disruptions.

Choose a self-paced course, input platform or free routine when the next need is basic sequence, extensive listening, reading volume or flexible practice rather than live feedback. Choose neither paid option when the trial does not produce a specific next plan or when the minimum cycle cannot be scheduled safely.

  • What exact task requires a live tutor?
  • What did the trial reveal about correction and fit?
  • Can every minimum-plan lesson be booked before renewal?
  • What is the complete checkout total after fees and tax?
  • What alternative would solve the same job with less commitment?
