Brazilian or European Portuguese comes first

The varieties are mutually intelligible, but pronunciation, connected speech, common vocabulary and preferred forms differ. A learner can understand both over time while still choosing one reference model for early production.

Write down the people, country and situations that define the goal. Then inspect the exact course label, speaker origin and sample audio before paying.

What the large apps currently publish

Babbel labels its course Brazilian Portuguese and does not publish a European Portuguese course. Busuu also identifies its Portuguese route as Brazilian and currently lists it from A1 through B2. Rosetta Stone's current catalogue specifies Brazilian Portuguese.

A provider that says only ‘Portuguese’ needs another check. Do not infer variety from a general language count or a reviewer who studied a different course.

Build a European Portuguese route deliberately

Practice Portuguese is dedicated to European Portuguese and publishes human-recorded audio. Drops separates European and Brazilian Portuguese vocabulary products. A Portugal-focused tutor can add live register and pronunciation feedback.

Use the dedicated European Portuguese page for the full decision. The goal is not to reject all cross-language tools, but to stop a Brazilian default from becoming an invisible mismatch.

Use input and speaking to expand after the base

For either variety, add supported listening from speakers who match the goal. Use transcripts selectively and note where connected speech differs from the written form.

When conversation matters, practise scenarios with the target variety and ask for corrections that affect intelligibility or appropriateness. Avoid treating a generic speech-recognition score as a regional pronunciation assessment.
